Here at Castlemine Farm, we have always believed in sustainable farming, long before it was fashionable. The farm has been in our family for over 200 years, passing from generation to generation. As custodians of the land, it is our responsibility to care for it.

Sustainability

Animal welfare is central to everything we do. All our animals enjoy a good quality of life grazing on our lush pastures and soaking up the sun. They are allowed to grow and mature slowly, in a healthy and respectful way.
We go the extra mile to care about our animals because we know that quality of life means quality of produce. Also, grass-fed animals have a sweeter taste, especially in limestone regions such as Roscommon.

We also source from other great farmers in our region to ensure continuous supply of great meat. Our farm shop has its very own kitchen which uses ingredients straight from the farm. Natural. No preservatives. Sourced locally wherever possible.
Our Christmas turkeys are all free-range, allowed to forage outside and grow at their own pace. We also have our own beehives and biodiverse hedgerows.
As a working family farm embedded in the local community, we are passionate about local food and the local economy. Castlemine Farm is our livelihood, but more importantly, it is our way of life.
Sustainability Project
In January 2024, our son Sean won the Senior Individual Award in the Biological & Ecological category of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition with his project exploring ‘The long-term effects of a more sustainable method of keeping nutrients in the soil as an alternative to an artificially made granule’. He also had the honour of discussing his research project findings with President Michael D. Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin.
